An Unforgettable Experience

Here, I would like to introduce an unforgettable and proud experience of working as a narrator of the re-entry module of Shenzhou VI Spaceship in Shanghai Science & Technology Museum.

From 3rd to 16th in April, 2006, the re-entry module of Shenzhou VI Spaceship, the high popularity of one in China, was displayed in Shanghai Science & Technology Museum for two weeks. Since professional narrators were badly needed, leaders of this museum decided to select narrators of the re-entry module of Shenzhou VI Spaceship from these volunteers. In terms of my excellent performance and rich experience as a volunteer, I was honored to act as the narrator to it for two weekends. During that period, the most difficult challenge was that I was required to remember a great deal of knowledge on Shenzhou VI. Firstly, in the 3-minute narration, I had to make a clear and fluent introduction on the basic knowledge of the re-entry module of Shenzhou VI Spaceship. Secondly, during the narration, because of various questions on Shenzhou VI Spaceship asked by the the audience, I not only carefully summed up the materials on Shenzhou VI for our narrators, but also searched for abundant information related to Shenzhou VI on the Internet. In the end, for my complete mastery of professional knowledge on Shenzhou VI, I excellently answered audiences’ questions, for which I achieved unanimous approval and high comments from the leaders and other narrators of the museum. On the first day as a narrator, I felt a little nervous in front of the audiences. Along with my accumulation of knowledge and experience, I was gradually filled with confidence in narration and easily faced audiences’ each question. From that, I was provided with an incredible sense of accomplishment which will support me to confidently deal with all tasks in future.

Because there were so many audiences visiting re-entry module of Shenzhou VI, there was always a block in front of the booth, which directly caused the other audiences’ inconvenience in visiting the display. However, my repeated words “please move forward to make room for these audiences in the back” did not work in solving this problem. Under this circumstance, I was informed by the experienced leader of the museum to move forward slowly as I narrated, in this way, the audiences will unconsciously follow me to move forward. With the efficient method, I successfully solved the block problem and also improved my flexible problem-solving ability.

In a word, thanks to this meaningful volunteer activity, I not only largely improved my comprehensive ability, but also deeply understood the saying No Pains, No Gains, which will positively support my further academic study and work in future.

What international/cross-cultural experiences will you bring to Brandeis International Business School and how will this contribute to the classroom?

As a result of my excellent academic performance, I was selected to study as an exchange student at Tokyo International Business College from October 2010 to March 2011. Despite of the language barrier, I adapted to the life and study there shortly because I tried my best to communicate with Japanese classmates and made friends with them. With this tip, I am confident that I can get familiar with my classmates in Brandeis International Business School in a short time.

In Japan, I took courses related to international trade. Besides, I spent some time in the library reading books and journals on financial development in Japan. Having gained good understanding of Japanese financial market, I enjoyed discussing with professors and students, which not only greatly enhanced my creative thinking and overall perspective, but also developed my international vision. Moreover, in this process, I improved my communication skills in multicultural surroundings.

As far as I know, in addition to the cutting-edge theory, the Brandeis International Business School is dedicated to providing students with international horizon necessary for their career success in the future. Therefore, my study will certainly involve closely with a lot of communication and interaction among learned faculty and students from different backgrounds. On one hand, I could be exposed to diverse thinking patterns and insight ideas, both of which would further cultivate my thought models and international vision. On the other hand, I am able to share my unique views with professors and classmates based on my different learning experience.

Last but not least, I am from China, the biggest developing country that has successfully maintained its economic growth for over 30 years. It is my firm belief that my Chinese origin and cultural background will undoubtedly contribute to the learning environment and cultural diversity at your community.

How do you see yourself living SLU's Jesuit mission throughout your college experience and beyond?

My parents attach importance to my studies, but also teach me how to be a reliable and responsible person. I bear this in mind daily. In my opinion, a person must be responsible for what she says and does; so, I always think before I speak, and I always act with my goals in my mind. Two years ago, I made up my mind to pursue studies in the United States. I have met a lot of difficulties, but I saw my choice through. I persisted and worked my hardest. With this experience as my guide, Saint Louis University will be a natural fit for me. I like that there is a focus not just on academics but the whole person; and, I am drawn to the Jesuit ideals of leadership and service to others. I have been an active member of my community, musically and athletically. At Saint Louis University, I hope to join some musical ensembles and possible play basketball, soccer or tennis. I also think it’s important to cheer on my fellow Billikens! Sharing my Chinese customs will also help me contribute to the learning environment and cultural diversity on campus. Most importantly, I plan to get involved with several service clubs and the servant leadership program. I am certain that these experiences will prepare me for lifetime of service and compassion.

Malcolm Forbes stated that, "Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one." Discuss what this quotation means to you.

First of all, I agree with this quotation. In my opinion, education is vitally important for a person’s career development. My father is my idol. He holds a PhD degree. With his efforts, he becomes a senior manager in a big company in China. He used to further his study in the United States. He gained an in-depth understanding of the quality of American education. As a result, he always tells me that America is an ideal place for ambitious youth to pursue higher education. He specifically suggested that I pursue my studies in the US. Naturally, with his encouragement, I made up my mind to study in America.

Since 2011, I have been studying at Allen Academy in Bryan, Texas. So far I have taken courses on American history and art. I could not study either of those subjects in China. Thus, I have gained a better understanding of American history and culture. In addition, I have not only enhanced my independent living skills, but also improved my problem-solving ability. What I like best about America is the constant encouragement from my teachers. I rarely experienced that in China. My experience as an international student has enabled me to understand America. More importantly, it has helped me get accustomed to American studying methods. I am confident this will enhance my undergraduate studies and help me attain my career goals.
